The Syro-Malabar Mission, Gold Coast, was established in 2008 with just ten families under the spiritual leadership of Fr. Thomas Areekuzhy. In its early days, the Holy Mass was celebrated in the homes of Ms. Jincy and Jasmin, as the community was new to the area and church facilities were unavailable. The mission was founded to foster the spiritual well-being of Syro-Malabar Catholics and to bear witness to the Gospel through their lives.
The first Holy Mass within the community was celebrated on 10 May 2009, officiated by Fr. Thomas Areekuzhy. As the community grew, Masses, initially held in homes, were gradually moved to Sacred Heart Church, Clear Island Waters; Surfers Paradise Catholic Church; and Guardian Angels Church, Southport. Currently, Mass is celebrated at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, Nerang.
Over the years, the mission has been blessed with the spiritual guidance of Fr. Peter Kavumpuram, Fr. Abraham Kazhunadiyil, Fr. Varghese Vavolil, and Fr. Anto Chiriyankandath. Though they served in different parishes across Brisbane, their dedication and hard work were instrumental in strengthening the faith of the community while preserving its religious traditions. The mission will always be deeply grateful for their tireless dedication in travelling to serve the community, celebrating the Holy Mass, and fulfilling the spiritual needs of its members.
On 8 June 2014, the Syro-Malabar Community in Gold Coast marked a historic milestone as it was elevated to mission status. This joyous occasion was graced by Bishop Bosco Puthur, who administered the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation to the children. The celebration was further enriched by the presence of Fr. Peter Kavumpuram, who co-celebrated the Holy Mass. This momentous event remains a significant chapter in the spiritual journey of our community, reflecting our unwavering faith and commitment to growth.
Another remarkable milestone was achieved with the appointment of Fr. Ashok Ambazhathinkal as the first resident parish vicar. Since taking charge as the full-time parish priest, the mission has witnessed remarkable growth, now comprising 200 registered families. Several ministries are actively engaged in faith formation and community service, including SMYM (Syro-Malabar Youth Movement), the Nurses Ministry, and Mathrudeepthi, which hold regular monthly sessions and extend support to the poor and marginalised across the Gold Coast. The mission also actively supports international students in maintaining their Catholic faith and staying connected to Syro-Malabar traditions. The SMYM unit plays a vital role in various diocesan and forane-level programmes and events.
Catechism classes, which began in community members’ homes in 2008, have significantly expanded. Today, the mission has 244 students from Prep to Year 12, attending classes every Sunday under the leadership of Principal Ms. Remya Joy, supported by 26 regular and 3 casual teachers. The three-day Faith Fest and two-day Bible Kalolsavam are highlights of the catechetical curriculum.
The mission is structured into nine family units, each gathering monthly for prayer and scripture sharing. These units also take turns leading the readings and maintaining the church premises.
Another key ministry is the Church Choir, which enhances the liturgical experience by encouraging active participation in praise and worship.
Currently, the mission is actively working towards being declared an independent parish, with the Parish Council and trustees leading this effort.
